One of the questions we're asked most is what to pack for Marrakech. Having welcomed travellers across every season, we can tell you the climate swings hard — scorching summers, genuinely cold winter nights — and dressing respectfully makes the whole trip smoother. Here's exactly what to wear.
Wear modest, lightweight, layered clothing in Marrakech. Covering shoulders and knees — for both men and women — is appreciated, especially in the medina. Choose breathable fabrics like cotton and linen so you stay cool and covered at once, and pack a layer for cool evenings.
Loose beats tight. Flowing clothing is both cooler in the heat and more culturally comfortable than fitted styles.
In summer, wear loose, long, light clothing that covers your skin. Temperatures hit 38–45°C, and counterintuitively, covered skin stays cooler and protected from the sun than shorts and vests. Add a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen.
In winter, pack layers and a warm jacket for cold nights. Days are mild and pleasant, but evenings and mornings are genuinely cold — and many riads aren't heavily heated. Bring closed shoes, and pack properly for snow if you're visiting the Atlas Mountains.
Spring and autumn are the easiest seasons to dress for. Warm days and cool evenings call for breathable layers, a light jacket or shawl for after dark, and comfortable walking shoes for the medina's uneven streets. These shoulder seasons are our favourite time to visit.
Women do not need to cover their hair in Marrakech. Simply favouring tops that cover the shoulders and bottoms that reach the knee keeps you comfortable and draws less attention in busy areas — while leaving plenty of room for colour and personal style.
For the desert, pack layers and a scarf. Desert days are hot and nights turn cold, so layering is essential. A scarf does triple duty: sun protection by day, warmth by night, and cover from the wind and sand.
See our desert tours and activities if the Sahara or Agafay is on your list. Pack with the season and culture in mind, and Marrakech becomes far more enjoyable.
