After years of helping travellers plan their first trip to the Red City, we've learned that three days is the itinerary that gets it right. It's long enough to feel the medina, escape to the mountains or desert, and still slow down over a mint tea. Here's exactly how we'd map your 72 hours.
Three days is the ideal length for a first visit to Marrakech. It gives you a full day in the medina, a day for gardens and culture, and a third day for a day trip to the desert or Atlas Mountains — without feeling rushed. Two days feels tight; four lets you add the coast.
We've watched travellers try to squeeze Marrakech into a single day and leave overwhelmed. Three days is the sweet spot.
Spend day one inside the medina walls. Wander the souks in the morning, visit the Bahia Palace and Ben Youssef Madrasa in the afternoon, then watch Jemaa el-Fnaa square come alive with food stalls and musicians at sunset from a rooftop terrace.
Start in the souks — the covered markets selling lanterns, leather, and spices. Haggling is expected, so stay friendly and start at about a third of the asking price.
By late afternoon, make your way to Jemaa el-Fnaa. Grab a rooftop table overlooking the square and watch the whole city gather below you as the sun goes down.
Nervous about getting lost on day one? Our guided medina walks take the stress out of it entirely.
Day two is for beauty and slowing down. Visit the cobalt-blue Jardin Majorelle early, explore the YSL and Berber museums, then spend the afternoon in a traditional hammam. Finish with dinner in the modern Gueliz district.
Go to the Jardin Majorelle first thing to beat the crowds — it's worth it. The nearby museums each fill a pleasant hour.
In the afternoon, do as locals do and book a traditional hammam: a steam, black-soap scrub, and massage. It's the perfect reset after a day on your feet.
Use your final day to get out of the city. The Agafay desert (45 minutes away) is best if you're short on time; the Ourika Valley offers waterfalls and mountain air; and Ait Ben Haddou's UNESCO kasbah rewards a longer drive. All are easy day trips.

Stay in a riad, carry cash, and dress modestly. Book a riad inside the medina for the full experience, but arrange an airport transfer since taxis can't reach most riad doors. Bring small dirham notes for the souks, and favour light, covering clothing.
